What to Expect in Counselling
Whether you have participated in a form of counselling previously or this is your first time, it is normal to wonder what to expect from the process when meeting a new counselor.

One important area to keep in mind is that you have a choice in who your therapist/counselor is. If you feel comfortable, heard, informed and have a voice in your counselling experience this will optimize your involvement in the therapeutic process and your success. I understand the importance of therapist-client fit and I am happy to support clients in seeking out other counselling options to meet their needs.
Common Questions about the Counselling Process
What should I expect from a 15 minute phone consultation?

The phone consultation is an opportunity for you begin to gauge comfort and fit and there is no obligation to schedule an appointment.
The phone consultation also provides me the opportunity to further answer any questions or concerns you might have, review how I approach the counselling process and potential next steps.
What should I expect in the first session?

The first session is an opportunity for me to gain a better understanding of your primary areas of concern, any historical or present information you think would be helpful for me to know and understand, previous counselling strategies or tools utilized and your goals.
The first session also provides you with the further opportunity to decide if you feel that I will be a fit for your needs and/or if my style and therapeutic approach is meaningful for you.

Before the first session concludes I summarize primary concerns and goals and review potential next steps and therapeutic approaches. When discussing potential next steps I review why these next steps may be meaningful in relation to the information and goals shared. This time at the end of the session also provides an opportunity for clients to discuss what approach and next step is a comfortable start for them.
